The members of BirdLife Australia, along with our supporters and partners, have been powerful advocates for native birds and the conservation of their habitats since 1901.

We are also the meeting ground for everyone with an interest in birds from the curious backyard observer to the dedicated research scientist. It doesn’t matter what your interest in birds is or how much you know about them, your membership will offer you the opportunity to increase your awareness and enjoyment.

Although birds are usually quite easy to see, often they are more difficult to identify. You may have had the briefest glimpse or heard a snatch of its song, or perhaps it was a bird you have never seen before. The best place to look for it is here.

Conservation

BirdLife Australia's primary objective is to “Achieve improvements in the state of Australia’s birds by mitigating the main threats to selected taxa and assemblages”, so that we all get to enjoy them in the future. This means improving outcomes for birds by tackling the threats they face. Our all important Bird Conservation Strategy outlines how we aim to do this.

We do this through our involvement in conservation science, our advocacy efforts and our diverse projects.

We are actively engaged in the science of conserving birds. Our conservation activities and policies are overseen by our Research and Conservation Committee (RACC), made up of highly respected scientists, researchers and conservationists. Members of RACC work with our staff to understand the threats our birds face and to articulate the actions needed to reduce these threats and conserve our birdlife.

Together, we are a powerful voice for Australia’s birds. Our advocacy efforts are based on sound science and we seek to influence others to make decisions in favour of Australia’s birds by engaging with key decision makers, land managers and the media. Our conservation submissions and campaigns are underpinned by strong, credible policies.

BirdLife Australia’s projects form a vital link between volunteers collecting data, scientists conducting research and decision-makers who use and rely on that research.These projects engage community and organisations in conservation and provide excellent value for the funder.
