Celebrating 10 years of the Aussie Bird Count

Now in its tenth year, the Aussie Bird Count is Australia’s largest annual citizen science event, with around 100,000 people participating each year. The Aussie Bird Count is for all ages and involves observing and counting the birds that live near you, be it in your garden, the local park, the beach or even outside your office window!

By telling us about the birds you’ve seen within a 20-minute period, you will help BirdLife Australia develop an understanding of local birds while getting to know the wildlife on your doorstep.

Save the date and invite your friends – the Aussie Bird Count is coming up and we can’t wait!

To take part in Australia’s biggest citizen science event, simply:

  1. Register as a counter via the Aussie Bird Count website
  2. Download our Aussie Bird Count app on the Apple Store or Google Play
  3. Pick a spot – you can count in your own backyard, local park or favourite outdoor space, or even from the comfort of your own home!
  4. Enter your location in the app and get counting by recording the number of species you see in a 20-minute period, and
  5. Submit your count using the app or our handy web form.

Each count takes just 20 minutes and helps BirdLife Australia’s scientists track how our urban bird populations are faring – and just by counting, you’ll go into the running to win some incredible prizes!
