About BirdLife Top End

The BirdLife Top End local group  is a central forum for community activities centered around the conservation of birds and their habitats in the ‘Top End’ region of the Northern Territory. The BirdLife Top End local group aligns with the core values of BirdLife Australia to make a real and positive difference for Australia’s birds in the Northern Territory

About the role

Birds in Schools is a program that uses skilled birdwatchers from BirdLife Top End to engage with local schools to engage children and their teachers in learning about the birds in their local area, and how to monitor them. The premise of the program is to work with teachers to provide a curriculum-appropriate lesson plan, aimed at engaging school-aged children in bird watching, and the importance of scientific monitoring.

The Birds in Schools Officer Will

  • Work with the committee, the NT STEM teachers organisation and Inspired NT to identify schools interested in joining the program
  • Liaise with teachers to attend schools and provide a lesson on bird identification and survey techniques, tailored to the age group.
  • Provide teachers with identification and learning resources from BirdLife Australia
  • Use Birddata to collate data on birds being monitored through the program,
  • Provide a quarterly summary of the program to the BirdLife Top End Committee,
  • Create communication products designed to communicate the progress of the program to the wider community quarterly, and yearly (i.e. newsletter update, social media post, poster etc.)
  • Hold a valid NT Working with Children (ochre) card and undergo a National Police Check.

The role is voluntary and would suit someone who works flexible hours, is a student, or is retired, as most school visits will be likely to occur during weekdays.
