Background

The proposed Whalers Way Orbital Launch Complex (EPBC 2021/9013) will have significant and unacceptable impacts on nationally threatened birds, including the Mallee Whipbird and the Southern Emu-wren (Eyre Peninsula) – both listed as Endangered under the EPBC Act.

The proposed launch complex would destroy habitat on the Eyre Peninsula critical to the survival for both of these birds, conflicting directly with the Federal Government’s conservation goals and both birds’ Conservation Advice.

In a public comment period, over 90% of comments opposed the launch facility at Whalers Way. Experts have also voiced concerns about the decision to knowingly risk extinctions.

Please, help us save Whalers Way! Use our email tool to ask key decision makers to protect these threatened Aussie birds.

Southern Emu-wren

The emu-wrens are named for their six wispy, emu-like tail feathers.
