The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has proposed changes to the regulation of anticoagulant rat poisons. This scorecard assesses whether those proposed measures are likely to reduce the poisoning of native birds, wildlife, and pets.
While some limited steps have been proposed, the measures overall fall short. Most high-risk products would remain available to the public, and wildlife would continue to face exposure through secondary poisoning. Routine, widespread public use of long-lasting SGARs is killing wildlife on a national scale and these proposed regulations won’t change that. Our experts have analysed the recommendations which were quietly released by the regulator in December 2025 and here is how they stack up for wildlife: Check out our scorecard.
