The members of BirdLife Australia, along with our supporters and partners, have been powerful advocates for native birds and the conservation of their habitats since 1901.

We are also the meeting ground for everyone with an interest in birds from the curious backyard observer to the dedicated research scientist. It doesn’t matter what your interest in birds is or how much you know about them, your membership will offer you the opportunity to increase your awareness and enjoyment.

Bird Search

Although birds are usually quite easy to see, often they are more difficult to identify. You may have had the briefest glimpse or heard a snatch of its song, or perhaps it was a bird you have never seen before. The best place to look for it is here.

Branches and locations

Branches

BirdLife Australia has branches throughout Australia to share local interest and awareness. Our branches provide the perfect platform for communities to participate in BirdLife Australia's bevy of activities, events and projects, many of which include vital bird conservation work on a local, regional or national scale. Often, local knowledge and enthusiasm makes a world of difference.

Special Interest Groups

Some birds face particular problems that demand a focus on their specific needs. BirdLife Australia utilises the skills of our Special Interest Groups to conduct and coordinate studies and projects on selected groups of birds – Raptors, Seabirds, and Waders. Much of their work has global significance. Join one of our Special Interest Groups to extend and enrich your interest in birds and our natural environment.

All Victoria Statewide

The state of Victoria contains a large proportion of BirdLife Australia's branches. Victoria is located in the south east corner of Australia and bounded by the Murray River in the north, South Australia in the west and Bass Strait and the southern Ocean in the south.

BirdLife Ballarat

BirdLife Ballarat operate in the area of Ballarat, Clunes, Linton, Maryborough and Newstead. The branch holds regular monthly outings and meetings, and members often take part in the working bees at Clarkesdale Bird Sancturary, Linton.

BirdLife Bass Coast

Our region covers most of the Bass Coast Shire extending from the Western Port coastline of West Gippsland to Cape Liptrap and north to the Strezlecki Ranges and includes Phillip Island and French Island.

BirdLife Bayside

Although BirdLife Bayside is based in Beaumaris (Melbourne) as that is where our meetings are held, we range far and wide on our outings and our membership is not geographically based.

BirdLife Bellarine Peninsula

Birdlife Bellarine is a small group of bird enthusiasts dedicated to bird observing. The group draws membership primarily from the Bellarine Peninsula, but also has members from as far afield as Melbourne.

BirdLife East Gippsland

The BirdLife East Gippsland region covers the East Gippsland and Wellington Shires in Victoria’s east, and includes some of the state’s most magnificent wilderness areas. It encompasses the extensive waterways of the Gippsland Lakes, 90 Mile Beach, the iconic Snowy River region, extensive old-growth forests, alpine meadows and the last free-flowing wild rivers of southeast Australia.

BirdLife Echuca District

BirdLife Echuca District is a cross-border Branch that aims to serve approximately 120 members who reside in southern New South Wales (including Shire of Murray, Deniliquin, Shire of Conargo, Barham and surrounding areas) or northern Victoria, (including Campaspe Shire, City of Greater Bendigo, Gunnawarra Shire, Loddon Shire and surrounding areas.

BirdLife Hamilton

We embrace central western Victoria with members and outings covering the following areas Merino, Carapook, Konongwootong, Caddens Flat, Casterton, Nareen, Harrow, the southern edge of Rocklands Reservoir, Victoria Valley & Southern Grampians, Glenthompson, Caramut, Hawkesdale, Willatook, Orford, Hotspur, and Digby.

BirdLife Horsham

Horsham branch has outings in the local area on the first Sunday of each month except January.

BirdLife Melbourne

BirdLife Melbourne is the Melbourne Branch of BirdLife Australia serving members in suburban Melbourne with monthly meeting at Balwyn and Carlton. BirdLife Melbourne runs a variety of regular outings, visting some excellent birding sites in Melbourne and beyond.

BirdLife Mildura

Birdlife Mildura is situated in the northwest corner of Victoria. Our membership, of approximately 40, comes from the river towns in N.S.W. and from Mildura and surrounding districts.

BirdLife Mornington Peninsula

Located on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. All BirdLife Australia members on the Mornington Peninsula (with a postcode of 3910-3920, 3199-3201, 3901 or 3926-3944) are considered members of our branch.

BirdLife Murray-Goulburn

The Murray Goulburn Branch of BirdLife Australia is based in the Shepparton region in Victoria’s Goulburn Valley, 180 km north of Melbourne.

BirdLife Nhill

BirdLife Nhill is a branch providing local activities for BirdLife members in Nhill and surrounding areas in western Victoria. Field trips within driving distance of Nhill are held almost every month at week-ends, and once or twice a year we have a week-end “camp-out” to somewhere further away or interstate where different birds are to be seen.
