BirdLife Australia is leading the way in bird conservation. Today, we are proud to be Australia's largest bird conservation charity, made up of hundreds of thousands of members, volunteers and supporters across the country.
We work locally, nationally and globally to drive the recovery of threatened birds, restore nature and stop extinctions. Science and our supporters are vital ingredients in achieving our goals.
We collaborate with leading experts, partner with landholders, lobby governments and meet with schools and communities—and more—to protect Australia’s birds and their habitats and stop bird extinctions.
Australia is the land of birds.
From tiny emu-wrens to the mighty Southern Cassowary, to the many colourful cockatoos and parrots that light up our skies and everything in between, our country is home to over 800 species of birds, and almost half of them are found nowhere else in the world.
Birds enrich our lives and connect us to the natural world, but they also play a vital role within the ecosystems we are all a part of. Birds are nature’s gardeners, transforming entire landscapes by pollinating flowers, recycling nutrients and planting forests—with seeds in their poo! Birds help control pests and reduce the spread of disease by scavenging carrion. And because they respond quickly to changes in the environment and climate, birds are barometers for the health of our planet – when birds are disappearing, it’s a clear sign that something is wrong. When we protect birds, we’re protecting nature too. To save birds is to save life.
Now more than ever, our birds need our help. Australia is in an extinction crisis: almost 1 in 6 birds are threatened with extinction, facing growing threats like climate change, fire, habitat loss and predation by introduced species. We want future generations to know their songs too – but we need your help.
If you love birds and nature, you can help us stop extinctions by driving the recovery of threatened birds and restoring their habitats for the benefit of us all. Together, we can achieve extraordinary outcomes for birds and for the planet.
