Outing Overview

Birds & Beans Social Bird Walk – Huntly Gardens Nature Reserve
Tuesday 5th of May 2026 – 8:00am

Our Birds & Beans walk at Huntly Gardens Natural Reserve invites you to explore a truly special pocket of local history and habitat. This historic six-acre reserve was originally set aside in 1866 and is now undergoing significant ecological restoration by the Northern Bendigo Landcare Group, transforming it into a thriving green space with thousands of native plantings, nest boxes for wildlife, and a growing focus on community, environmental and educational activities.

Our walk will follow the peaceful Huntly Gardens Walking Track, beginning near the Lions Park Rest Area, crossing seasonal Back Creek via a narrow bridge, and leading into the reserve’s remnant vegetation. The tranquil bush setting and regenerating habitat make it an ideal location for observing local birdlife at a relaxed pace. As always, we’ll finish our morning of birds and conversation with a well-earned coffee at George’s Bakehouse — combining nature, learning and good company in one rewarding outing.

What to bring/wear: Make sure to bring plenty of water, along with your binoculars and camera gear. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, long trousers, and sturdy closed shoes to keep safe from snakes.

Onsite Facilities: There are toilet facilities available at the start of our walk.

Cancellation Information for Outings:

Activities will be cancelled if, during the activity period; severe weather warnings are in place, temperatures over 35C or persistent rain is forecast, a Total Fire Ban has been declared or other safety issue is identified. Please check BirdLife Bendigo/Echuca District Facebook page on the evening before a walk, in case the event has been cancelled.
