Harry Moore is a Research Scientist at the Western Australian Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. His work focuses largely on how climate change interacts with other threats like large-scale wildfire and predation to impact threatened fauna, especially in the south-west region. Perth is no stranger to hot and dry summers, but the period from October 2023 to April 2024 was exceptional. The city’s rainfall during these seven months was only 23 millimetres, the lowest since records began in the 1870s. He will be discussing a recent paper they published in the journal Pacific Conservation Biology, which investigated how some of Perth’s bush birds responded to this unprecedented drought. The findings offer insight into the role of urban refuges as critical habitats for native wildlife in a warming and drying climate, shaping how we plan and manage urban environments to support biodiversity in the face of climate change.
