BirdLife WA - Walk - Lake Mealup, Point Grey

  • Date Saturday, 29 March 2025
  • Time 8:00 am
  • Locations Lake Mealup, Point Grey

Overview

This is a new site, not normally open to the public. It is expected the lake will be dry at this time of the year; however, we expect a good range of bush birds.

Bring a chair and morning tea to have while we do a combined birdlist.

For BLWA members and their guests.

Leader: Rob Wroth

Getting there

Meet at the campsite at 8.00 am. To reach the campsite:
Head south along Forrest Highway, turn right into Greenlands Rd West. The turnoff is about 1 km south of the ‘ice cream cone’ sculptures on the eastern side of the Highway. Travel west and southwest along Greenlands Rd West for about 6.5 km. Turn left (south) into Lake Mealup Rd. Note this does not look like a crossroads. It looks more like a good gravel track to the left and a kind of laneway into a property on the right. Follow Lake Mealup Rd as it heads south (2 km), west (2.7 km) then winds around the bottom of the lake (you can’t see it for the trees), crossing the Mealup Main Drain twice. After crossing the drain for the second time, continue to head west for about 0.6 km, then turn right (north – do not continue west along the limestone track to the estuary) into Lake Mealup Rd North. After about 0.6 km the road turns left (west). Look for the gate into the Lake Mealup Preservation Society’s property. It is on the northern side of the corner, partly hidden by trees. Enter the gate (it should be unlocked for scheduled visitors) and follow the track as it winds right (east) and reaches the campsite after about 400 m (please also see the map attached to the event information).
