BirdLife Kangaroo Island undertakes social and conservation-based birdwatching activities across the island. Birding on Kangaroo Island is remarkably easy – over 260 species have been recorded and many are easily seen in very spectacular locations.

Members of Birdlife Kangaroo Island participate in a number of conservation projects and initiatives across the island, including:
- post-bushfire bird monitoring at nearly 100 sites across the island
- annual Glossy Black-Cockatoo survey
- Little Penguin census
- biennial Hooded Plover count
- Migratory Shorebirds Monitoring Program
- a Beach Custodians program has been established to monitor Hooded Plover nests and erect temporary fencing and signage where and when necessary.
- Members of BirdLife Kangaroo Island enjoy ‘My Patch’, an ad hoc morning of birding at someone’s favourite spot.
- The KI Twitchathon – an annual birdwatching event to raise funds for bird conservation – has become an annual event.
