Based in the Southern Highlands of NSW, BirdLife Southern Highlands' members are involved in a range of birdwatching activities and local conservation projects.

About our group

Based in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, BirdLife Southern Highlands’ members can take part in a range of birdwatching activities, information nights, community events and local conservation projects, whether they are just starting out in birdwatching or experienced ornithologists.

Get involved

BirdLife Southern Highlands organises monthly outings – both mid-week and on weekends – to a special birdwatching location in one of the nearby forests, wetlands, rivers, heathlands, national parks and nature reserves.

We also host meetings where guest speakers and members bring us up to date on a range of birding matters. Meetings are usually held six times a year. BirdLife Southern Highlands conducts a number of conservation projects and activities, including:

  • The Long Paddock Project, a program of regular bird counts in 10 Travelling Stock Reserves near Taralga. Ranging from six to 40 hectares, these sites have been registered as Birdata survey sites, and a suggested route around each site has been plotted to help our members complete regular 500 metre area searches.
  • Mittagong Creek Riparian Regeneration Project, which sees BirdLife Southern Highlands members conduct monthly bird counts at five sites along Mittagong Creek to contribute to the Southern Highlands Council’s Environmental Mapping System.
  • Annual Snipe Count, which involves seasonal snipe surveys in the Southern Highlands Botanic Garden, as well as at two other sites in Bowral, and provides data to the National Snipe Project.
  • BirdLife Southern Highlands is a partner in the Wall to Wollondilly Project that is part of the Great Eastern Ranges Initiative. We provide two community training workshops each year and undertake regular bird surveys at five sites owned by Wingecarribee Shire Council and on selected private properties to measure changing bird density and diversity with respect to the success or otherwise of habitat restoration of habitats along the Wingecarribee River.
  • Wingecarribee Shire Council Schools Environment Day, when BirdLife Southern Highlands members provide birdwatching-related activities for primary school students. It has led to increased local participation in the Aussie Bird Count.
