About our group
The BirdLife Top End branch offers community activities centred around the conservation of birds and their habitats in the Top End of the Northern Territory. Members can participate in a variety of bird-related educational resources, workshops, events and excursions. We also conduct research and monitoring programs, capacity-building initiatives, representation and advocacy for birds under threat, and share knowledge and raise awareness among community members, and form collaborative partnerships with groups and Indigenous Traditional Owners that manage the land on which birds belong.
Get involved
BirdLife Top End organises a range of activities and events including outings, bird surveys, community engagement and displays, birdwatching events, conferences and support birding festivals.
BirdLife Top End conducts a number of vital bird conservation surveys and activities around Darwin, including:
- The Migratory Shorebird Monitoring Program sees regular surveys of shorebirds at a number of sites around Darwin, which is submitted to the national Migratory Shorebird Monitoring Program. The project introduces people to surveying shorebirds and raises awareness among people using the beaches of shorebirds and their needs.
- Birds on Bush Blocks allows skilled birdwatchers to engage with local communities to survey rural bush blocks, allowing landholders to become confident and skilled in identifying birds and employing appropriate survey techniques to continue surveys at their own leisure. These surveys may be useful in detecting population trends of birds on properties that might not otherwise be surveyed or visited by birdwatchers.
