BirdLife South East SA

BirdLife South East SA is a group for bird lovers and conservationists in southeastern South Australia. You can get involved in our fun activities and outings.

About our group

Southeastern South Australia is a diverse region, covering coastal and inland areas. This richness of habitat is reflected in birdlife, but many beautiful birds in the area are under threat. From the Mallee to the coast, across forests and wetlands, many special species are in short supply.

BirdLife South East SA focuses on celebrating and saving these birds. Our branch of BirdLife Australia was formed in 2010. Membership consists of BirdLife Australia members in south-eastern South Australia, and we have close links on projects and activities with Friends of Shorebirds SE in the same area.

Other activities we have been involved with include:

  • Running monthly counts in four habitats throughout the site with the Pick Swamp Wetland restoration project.
  • Assisting the SENRM Board to produce fact sheets for a website called nrmFauna and more recently a pocket booklet on wetland birds.
  • Participating in the annual counts for Orange-bellied Parrot, Red-tailed Black Cockatoo, and we provide observations to BirdLife Australia on other National projects (Australian Painted Snipe, Hooded Plover and Australasian Bittern).
  • Organising a search for the regionally Endangered Powerful Owl, declining Black-chinned Honeyeater and Chestnut-rumped Heathwren, with encouraging results.

Get involved

There are many different activities and events that we run at BirdLife South East SA. We’d love to have you join us for things like:

  • Annual monthly outings and seasonal campouts, alternating between coastal and inland sites in South Australia and Victoria.
  • Our Twitchathon and Bird Quiz.
  • Our October Long Weekend Campout.

In some years there is also an excursion to a site well outside our region.
