Join the Aussie Bird Count

Held over National Bird Week from 14‒20 October, the Aussie Bird Count is one of Australia’s biggest citizen science events. Every year, tens of thousands of Australians of all ages and experiences join us in observing and counting the birds we live with. In 2023, over 60,500 participants counted a staggering 3,608,545 birds ‒ and you can help us make this year’s count our biggest yet!

How to take part in the Aussie Bird Count

To join the 2024 Aussie Bird Count, simply:

  1. Register as a counter today at aussiebirdcount.org.au
  2. Download the free Aussie Bird Count app (you can find it on Google Play or the Apple Store)
  3. Pick a spot – you can count in your own backyard, local park or favourite outdoor space, or even from the comfort of your own home!
  4. Enter your location in the app and get counting by recording the name and number of each species you see in a 20-minute period, and
  5. Submit your count using the app or our handy web form.

Each count takes just 20 minutes and helps BirdLife Australia’s scientists track how our urban bird populations are faring – and just by counting, you’ll go into the running to win some incredible prizes!
