Birdlife Bendigo-Echuca Monthly Outing- Island Sanctuary, Deniliquin NSW Sunday 12 April. 2026, 8:00am
Join us for a relaxed morning of birdwatching at the beautiful Island Sanctuary, located along the Edward River in Deniliquin. This riverside reserve protects a remnant area of River Red Gum forest and provides excellent habitat for a wide variety of woodland and waterbird species.
Island Sanctuary is well known locally for its rich birdlife, with species such as Superb Fairywren, White-plumed Honeyeater, Sacred Kingfisher, Laughing Kookaburra, and a variety of parrots and honeyeaters often encountered. A potential highlight of the outing is the chance to see the beautiful Superb Parrot, a species closely associated with River Red Gum forests along inland rivers. Another interesting possibility is encountering the distinctive yellow form of the Crimson Rosella, sometimes referred to as the Yellow Rosella, which is characteristic of the Riverina region.
This outing will involve an easy walk along established tracks through the red gum forest and along the riverbank. It is a peaceful location and a wonderful opportunity to explore a significant patch of habitat within the Riverina region. As with many of our outings, this will be a relaxed and social morning, providing a great chance to share sightings, learn from others, and enjoy time in nature with fellow bird enthusiasts.
Deniliquin is approximately a two-hour drive from Bendigo, so participants may wish to consider staying in town the night before the outing. Alternatively, you may like to arrange to carpool with others who are planning to join the trip.
What to bring/wear: Make sure to bring plenty of water and some snacks, along with your binoculars and camera gear. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, long trousers, and sturdy closed shoes to keep safe from snakes.
Onsite Facilities: There are bathrooms positioned within the park and there food facilities available within the town centre.
