BirdLife Melbourne runs a wide variety of activities (birdwatching and bird surveys), visiting some fantastic birding areas, both in the Melbourne area and beyond (see below), and we encourage all members to get along to these activities, as they offer many opportunities to see some great birds as well as enjoying the company of other birdwatchers.
With the help of volunteers, BirdLife Melbourne’s Education Coordinator is implementing a program aimed at increasing the public’s knowledge of Australia’s native birds, their habitat and needs, and important conservation issues.
We conduct regular outings, both mid-week and on weekends, visiting some fantastic birding areas, both in the Melbourne area and beyond. There are also photography and beginners’ outings to appeal to a broader audience.
We run monthly meetings on the fourth Tuesday of each month (except December). Our meetings usually feature a guest speaker.
They are held at 8:00pm at the Foard Room, Greythorn Community Hub, 2 Centre Way, North Balwyn, Melway 46 H2. Centre Way runs north off Doncaster Rd, approximately 0.6km west of the Eastern Freeway.
Underground parking is available for entry from 7:15 pm to 8:00pm. Access from the underground car park to the ground floor is via a lift. Ground level parking is also available close to the venue. Access from ground level is via a door on the south side of our meeting room.
Members of BirdLife Melbourne conducts standardised monthly surveys of bird communities in 11 constructed urban wetlands in the Dandenong Valley Catchment (see list below).

Monthly walks are conducted at the Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve, which is managed by Parks Victoria. The reserve was established in 1965 to protect the sedge-rich Swamp Gum habitat along several creeks. Regular walks have been undertaken since shortly after its establishment in order to monitor the bird life present, particularly in response to the habitat improvement work that has been done on the reserve.
Walks are conducted on the first Sunday of every month (except January). The gate opens at 9:00 am, with the walk starting at 9.30 am, finishing with bird call around 2.30 pm.
