About our group
BirdLife Northern NSW covers an area from the Queensland border south to Port Macquarie and inland to Broken Hill, covering a wide range of habitat types.
BirdLife Northern NSW includes the sub-branch of BirdLife Northern Rivers, together with several affiliated and non-affiliated local groups.
We advocate for the protection of native birds and their habitat, a great many of which are gravely affected by mining (including coal seam gas extraction), coastal development and other threats.
Public education plays an important role in what we do. We have placed signs at important roosting, feeding and breeding sites from the Tweed River in the north, to the Port Macquarie coast and at inland areas identifying significant Regent Honeyeater habitat. Additional signs, posters and Bird Routes brochures have been developed to raise awareness of migratory and resident shorebirds.
Get involved
BirdLife Northern NSW conducts bird surveys, including:
- Regent Honeyeater Recovery Program in the Bundarra/Barraba region
- Migratory Shorebirds Monitoring Program in several coastal sites
- Surveys of Rufous Scrub-bird in separate rainforest locations
- Surveys in Northern NSW KBAs
Members also conduct bird surveys in support of Landcare Projects, Beach-nesting Bird projects, KBA health-checks and Osprey monitoring for Tweed LGA.
BirdLife Northern NSW holds two campouts each year, in autumn and spring. Our AGM is generally held on the first day of the autumn campout.
