Dear Supporter,
Here is our October eNews – we hope you find it useful and informative.
October Bird Walks
We have two walks happening this month.
Walk #1: Saturday 5 October – Rise and Shine Bushland Reserve, Sandon
Join BirdLife Castlemaine District and members of the South East Australia Naturalists Association (SEANA) for a bird walk at Rise and Shine Bushland Reserve. Located between Newstead and Daylesford, the Reserve is a hot spot for renowned photographer, ecologist and blog publisher Geoff Park. We will walk a loop on rough dirt vehicle tracks, with the possibility of walking off track through the bush.
Location and directions: Turn off the Daylesford-Newstead Road onto Zumpes Rd; a narrow dirt road with blind crests. Continue straight ahead at the first road junction (turning left will take you to private property). Currently there are beehives on your right. Strictly speaking you will no longer be on Zumpes Rd. Shortly after this is another road junction with a ‘No Through Road’ sign on it; find a place to park here.
Time: Meet at Rise and Shine Reserve at 9:00am, or to carpool from Castlemaine meet at 8:30am outside Castlemaine Community House (formerly Continuing Ed), Templeton Street.
Walk #2: Sunday 20 October – Castlemaine Botanical Gardens
Tanya Loos will lead an afternoon walk for Bird Week, the same week as the Aussie Backyard Bird Count. Bring your binoculars, and if you have a smartphone, come with your Aussie Backyard Bird Count App already downloaded and ready to go. Beginners and families welcome. We will do a count together to get you all set up for the Bird Count!
Time: Meet outside the Tea Rooms building in Castlemaine Botanical Gardens at 3:00pm.
Important information about walks: Bring water, snacks, binoculars, hat, sunscreen, sturdy shoes, long pants during snake season, and other weather-appropriate gear.
Walks will be cancelled if the temperature is forecast to be 35 degrees or more during the walk period, severe weather warnings are forecast, and/or if the day has been declared a Total Fire Ban.
Questions? If you have questions about our walks program, you can email us at castlemaine@birdlife.org.au, or call Judy Hopley (0425 768 559) or Asha Bannon (0418 428 721).
Join the Aussie Backyard Bird Count!
Back for its sixth year, the Aussie Backyard Bird Count runs from 21-27 October. It’s a great way to connect with the birds in your backyard, no matter where your backyard happens to be. You can count in a suburban backyard, a local park, a patch of forest, down by the beach, or the main street of town.
To take part all you need is 20 minutes and your favourite outdoor space. Not only will you be contributing to BirdLife Australia’s knowledge of Aussie birds, but there are also some great prizes on offer. Head over to the website and register as a Counter today!
