About the Role

Eyre management committee is seeking expressions of interest from volunteers to caretake at this unique facility for three-month periods during 2026 and 2027.

We have immediate need of caretakers who can assist between February  and April 2026.

The observatory is a not-for-profit research, education and nature-based facility.  We are looking for a couple or two volunteers who can share the role. Comfortable shared living quarters and all meals are provided.

As Eyre is situated in a wilderness environment in the Nuytsland Nature Reserve on the Great Australian Bight, dogs or other pets are not permitted.

Submit an expression of interest and tick this one off your bucket list in 2026!

What’s involved ?

Duties include managing visitors to the Observatory, weather reporting to Bureau of Meteorology, carrying out bird surveys, cooking for overnight guests, running nightly birdcall, cleaning the homestead, and office duties.
Bird enthusiasts are most welcome! Eyre Bird Observatory will not disappoint.
