How to record data in Birdata: mobile app

Existing users

• Check you have the latest version of Birdata in the App Store (iPhone) or Play Store (Android).
• Enter your email address and password, then tap ‘Log in’.

New users

• Download the Birdata app from the App Store (iPhone) or Play Store (Android).
• From your device, you can also go to https://birdata.birdlife.org.au and click ‘Download the app‘.
• Tap ‘Create a new account’. Fill in the short form, then tap ‘Register’, then log in (see above).

• Tap ‘record a survey’ at the top of the screen.

• Under ‘All Programs’ select ‘South-eastern Glossy Black-Cockatoo’.

• Under the ‘LOCATION’ tab, navigate to your point on the map by:
  • using your phone’s GPS location; or
  • moving the map with your fingers.
• Tap and hold on the map to create a new survey point, then tap ‘Record survey here’ at the bottom of the screen.

• Under the ‘DETAILS’ tab, check the ‘Start Date’ and ‘Observation Time’ of your survey are correct. Tap on them if you need to change them.
• If you are collecting data in a group, tap ‘Number of Observers’ and select the number of people collecting data. On Android, tap ‘Set’.
• ‘Location Accuracy’ is automatically set to ‘Within survey area’. If you survey more than 200 metres outside of your survey site (i.e., grid cell), tap ‘Location Accuracy’ and select an option.
• Tap ‘When did you arrive at your site/grid?’ and enter the time you arrived at your site/grid. This should autofill for any additional surveys taken in the same site/grid.
• If you are collecting data in a group, tap ‘Additional Observers’ and enter the first and last names of other group members.
  Tap ‘Weather conditions at time of observation’ and select the option(s) that best describes the weather conditions.
• If ‘Other’ is selected, specify the weather condition in the text box.
• Tap ‘Observer experience (GBC)’ and select your level of experience collecting data on Glossy Black-Cockatoos (Glossies).
• Tap ‘Did you see Glossies drinking here, and from what source?’ and select the option(s) that best describes your observations during the survey.
  • If ‘Yes’ or ‘Other’ is selected, specify/describe the type of water source in the text box.

• If you observed she-oaks:
  • Select ‘Yes’ under ‘Have you found any she-oaks?’ then record data on she-oaks (this includes data on chewings and feed trees; see Step 5, below).
• If you did not observe she-oaks:
  • Select ‘No’, and proceed to Step 6 (below).
• If you would like to add any photo(s) of she-oaks, chewings, or water source tap the ‘Add Photo’ box and select your images to upload.
• If you would like to record additional information about your site or survey, tap ‘Comments’ and enter your notes.

• Tap ‘From where you are standing, roughly how many she-oaks are around you?’ and select the category that best describes your observations during the survey.
• If you observed she-oaks with cones, select ‘Yes’ under ‘Do any of the she-oaks have cones?’.
• If you did not observe she-oaks with cones, select ‘No’, and proceed to Step 6 (below).
• If you observed any chewings or Glossies feeding, select ‘Yes’ under ‘Do any of these she-oaks with cones have chewings underneath them or Glossies feeding in them?’.
• If you did not observe any chewings or Glossies feeding, select ‘No’, and proceed to Step 6 (below).
• Tap ‘How many she-oaks have chewings underneath them or Glossies feeding in them?’ and select the category that best describes your observations during the survey.
• For she-oaks with chewings or birds in them tap ‘Tree Species’ then:
  • Tap ‘Tree species’ and select one option (select ‘Unsure’ if you are unsure of the tree species); and
  • Tap ‘Chewing colours’ and select all options that apply (select ‘Unsure’ if you are unsure of the colour). Tap the back arrow (top left-hand corner) to return to the previous screen.
• If you observed more than one feed tree species, tap ‘Add Tree Species’ and enter details of the additional species.
• When finished, tap ‘DONE’ in the top right-hand corner of the screen. Tap ‘Record Sightings’ at the bottom of the screen or the ‘SIGHTINGS’ tab at the top of the screen to proceed.

No Glossies observed:

• If you have not observed a feed tree or Glossy after 15-30min of searching (zero observations), this is valuable data. Leave the ‘SIGHTINGS’ tab blank then tap ‘Review & Submit’ to record the absence of Glossies and feed trees at the survey point. A warning may appear; you can ignore this.

At least one Glossy observed:

• If you observed a Glossy, under the ‘SIGHTINGS’ tab, tap the ‘Search by species name’ box at the top of the screen and select ‘Glossy Black-Cockatoo’.

• Next to ‘Count’, enter in the number of Glossies you observed.
• Tap ‘Sex’ and select one option.
• Tap ‘Age’ and select one option.
• Tap ‘Main activity’ and select one option that best describes the activity the bird(s) spent most of their time engaged in.
• If you would like to record additional information, tap the text box under ‘Notes’ and enter your notes.
• If you have taken a photo of the bird, tap the ‘Add Photo’ box and select your images to upload.
• When finished, tap ‘DONE’ or ‘SAVE’ in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

Add another Glossy:

• To add information on another bird (of different age, sex, or behaviour), tap ‘DONE’ or ‘SAVE’ in the top right-hand corner of the screen, and repeat the process by tapping in the ‘Search by species name’ box and selecting ‘Glossy Black-Cockatoo’.

• Once you have finished entering data, tap ‘Review & Submit’ at the bottom of the screen.
• Review your data to ensure you have entered it correctly.
• If you need to edit data, tap the relevant tab (e.g. ‘LOCATION’, ‘DETAILS’, ‘SIGHTINGS’) at the top of the screen.
• When finished, tap ‘Submit Survey’ at the bottom of the screen.
  NOTE: If you submit your survey in the Birdata app and later need to change any details, you can edit your survey using the web portal.
