Outing Overview

Birdlife Bendigo-Echuca Monthly Outing- Mt Korong Nature Conservation Reserve
Sunday 16th August. 2026, 9:00am

Join us for a birdwatching outing to Mt Korong Nature Conservation Reserve, one of central Victoria’s premier Box-Ironbark birding destinations. Rising prominently from the surrounding plains, Mt Korong is renowned for its impressive granite outcrops, rugged scenery and rich woodland habitats that support an exceptional diversity of birdlife.

Mount Korong is known for supporting a diverse range of dry open-forest and woodland species, making it an exciting location for observing several key Australian birds. The reserve is particularly celebrated for species such as the Painted Honeyeater, Gilbert’s Whistler, Diamond Firetail and Hooded Robin, along with a wide variety of honeyeaters, thornbills, robins and parrots. White-winged Choughs, Grey Shrike-thrushes, Scarlet and Eastern Rosellas and birds of prey including Wedge-tailed Eagles may also be encountered during the outing.

Beyond the birdlife, Mt Korong offers spectacular natural scenery, with towering granite boulders, rocky ridges and expansive Box-Ironbark bushland creating a uniquely scenic setting for birdwatching and nature photography. Seasonal flowering eucalypts and wattles often attract active feeding flocks, while the varied terrain provides opportunities to explore different habitats throughout the morning.

Some walking tracks may include uneven or rocky ground, so sturdy footwear and a reasonable level of mobility are recommended.

What to bring/wear: Make sure to bring plenty of water and some snacks, along with your binoculars and camera gear. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, long trousers, and sturdy closed shoes to keep safe from snakes. We will take a lunch break so bring a camp chair and something tasty for lunch.

Onsite Facilities:  There are facilities available within the reserve.

Traveling there: For those that are unsure of where to go, or may wish to carpool with others, we will meet at the parking lot of the Red Energy Arena, with a firm departure time of 8am

Cancellation Information for Outings: Activities will be cancelled if, during the activity period; severe weather warnings are in place, temperatures over 35C or persistent rain is forecast, a Total Fire Ban has been declared or other safety issue is identified. Please check BirdLife Bendigo/Echuca District Facebook page on the evening before a walk, in case the event has been cancelled.

Outing Leader: Brian Bird

All are welcome!

Getting there

Our meeting place is the entrance to the National Park on Cemetery Road at the intersection of Sylvaterre-Timms Lake Road. We may look to reduce the number of cars we have entering the park based on the number of people that attend the outing.
