Outing Overview

Birds & Beans Social Bird Walk – Castlemaine Botanical Gardens
Tuesday 4th November 2026,  8:30am

Our November Birds and Beans outing takes us to the beautiful Castlemaine Botanical Gardens, where ornamental plantings, mature exotic trees, open lawns and adjoining native vegetation combine to create a surprisingly diverse birding environment. Spring and early summer activity is usually well underway at this time of year, making the gardens an excellent location for observing both resident and seasonal bird species in a relaxed and accessible setting.

As we wander through the gardens and surrounding habitats, we will look for a variety of honeyeaters, parrots, thornbills and fairy-wrens, while waterbirds around the lake and taller canopy species add further interest throughout the morning. November can also bring the calls and movement of breeding birds, with fledglings often visible around the gardens and nearby bushland edges. The mix of native and exotic vegetation provides wonderful opportunities to observe feeding behaviour, territorial interactions and seasonal activity at close range.

As with all Birds and Beans outings, the morning is as much about enjoying good company as it is about the birds themselves. The relaxed pace of the walk encourages conversation, shared observations and the opportunity to learn from one another while enjoying the beautiful surroundings of the gardens. Following our birding session, we will visit a nearby café where members can unwind over coffee and brunch, continue sharing sightings and photographs, and enjoy the friendly social atmosphere that has become a hallmark of Birds and Beans activities.

Everyone is welcome

What to bring/wear: Make sure to bring plenty of water, along with your binoculars and camera gear. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, long trousers, and sturdy closed shoes.

Onsite Facilities: There are toilet facilities throughout the gardens. We will be visiting a local cafe for coffee and sweets at the end of our walk.

Cancellation Information for Outings: Activities will be cancelled if, during the activity period; severe weather warnings are in place, temperatures over 35C or persistent rain is forecast, a Total Fire Ban has been declared or other safety issue is identified. Please check BirdLife Bendigo/Echuca District Facebook page or this webpage on the evening before a walk, in case the event has been cancelled.
