Outing Overview

Birds & Beans Social Bird Walk – Lake Tom Thumb, Eaglehawk
Tuesday 1st September 2026,  8:30am

Join us for our September Birds and Beans outing for a relaxed morning of birdwatching at Lake Tom Thumb, one of Eaglehawk’s hidden birding gems. Surrounded by natural bushland, reed beds, and open water, the lake offers excellent opportunities to observe a variety of waterbirds and woodland species in a peaceful setting.

We will wander the easy walking track around the lake and adjoining areas, searching for ducks, grebes, parrots, honeyeaters, and other local birdlife while enjoying the changing seasonal activity around the wetlands. The mix of open water and box-ironbark habitat makes this a rewarding location for both birdwatching and photography.

This outing is suitable for birders of all experience levels, with a relaxed pace and plenty of opportunities to stop, observe, and chat along the way. As always, we will finish with coffee and conversation nearby as part of the Birds and Beans tradition.

Everyone is welcome

What to bring/wear: Make sure to bring plenty of water, along with your binoculars and camera gear. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, long trousers, and sturdy closed shoes.

Onsite Facilities: There are toilet facilities near-by at Lake Neangar. We will be visiting a local cafe for coffee and sweets at the end of our walk.

Cancellation Information for Outings: Activities will be cancelled if, during the activity period; severe weather warnings are in place, temperatures over 35C or persistent rain is forecast, a Total Fire Ban has been declared or other safety issue is identified. Please check BirdLife Bendigo/Echuca District Facebook page or this webpage on the evening before a walk, in case the event has been cancelled.
