Birdlife Bendigo-Echuca Monthly Outing- Boort Lakes Sunday 20th September 2026, 9:00am
Join us for a rewarding day of birdwatching at the beautiful Boort Lakes, one of northern Victoria’s hidden wetland treasures. Centered around Little Lake Boort and the adjoining Lake Boort, this scenic lake system offers a wonderful mix of open water, reed beds, mudflats, and lakeside woodland that regularly attracts an impressive diversity of birdlife.
With more than 50 bird species often recorded in the area, the outing promises excellent opportunities to observe a wide variety of waterbirds and bush birds in a relaxed and accessible setting. The reed-fringed shallows on the south-eastern side of Little Lake Boort are particularly productive, with pelicans, spoonbills, cormorants, darters, stilts, dotterels, crakes, rails, ducks, and teal all possible depending on seasonal conditions.
The surrounding foreshore vegetation and parkland can also be rewarding, with colourful species such as Blue-faced Honeyeaters and Musk Lorikeets regularly seen around the lakeside trees. Easy walking paths and constantly changing bird activity make the Boort Lakes an enjoyable destination for birdwatchers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts alike.
Whether you are an experienced birder or simply enjoy spending time in nature, the Boort Lakes provide a fantastic opportunity to explore one of the region’s most attractive wetland environments while enjoying a relaxed day in good company.
