How to record data in Birdata: web portal guide

• Go to the Birdata website.

Existing users

• Click ‘log in’ at the top right-hand corner of the page.
• Enter your email address and password, then click ‘Log in’.

New users

• Click ‘sign up’ on the picture banner. Fill in the short form, then click ‘Register’, then log in (see above).

• Click ‘record a survey’ at the top of the page.
• Under the ‘PROGRAM’ tab, click ‘South-eastern Glossy Black-Cockatoo’.
• Once highlighted, click ‘Next’.

• Under the ‘LOCATION’ tab, navigate to your point on the map by:
  • clicking and holding the mouse button then dragging the mouse across the map; and
  • zooming in or out using the mouse, or by clicking the plus and minus symbols in the bottom right-hand corner of the map.
• Click on the map to create a new survey point.
• Once a pin appears on the map, click ‘Next’ in the top right of the page.

• Under the ‘DETAILS’ tab, check the ‘Survey date’ and ‘Time of observation’ of your survey are correct. Click on them if you need to change them.
• If you are collecting data in a group, click the text box under ‘Number of observers’ and enter the number of people collecting data.
• The survey will be recorded as a private survey. The location and species recorded will not be publicly visible.

• Under ‘When did you arrive at your site/grid (24 hr)’, click the text boxes and enter the time (24 hour) you arrived at your site/grid. This should autofill for any additional surveys taken in the same site/grid.
• If you are collecting data in a group, under ‘Additional observers’ enter the first and last names of other group members.
• Under ‘Weather conditions at time of observation’, select the option(s) that best describes the weather conditions.
• If ‘Other’ is selected, specify the weather condition in the text box.

• Under ‘Did you see Glossies drinking here, and from what source?’, select the option(s) that best describes your observations during the survey.
• If ‘Yes’ or ‘Other’ is selected, specify/describe the type of water source in the text box (e.g. ‘Puddle on side of road’).
• Under ‘Observer experience in surveying Glossy Black-Cockatoo’, select your level of experience collecting data on Glossy Black-Cockatoos (Glossies).
• Under ‘Total number of Glossy Black-Cockatoos observed’, enter the total number of Glossies in the text box (zero ‘0’ if you did not see any). A warning may appear; you can ignore this for now.
• Under ‘Have you found any she-oaks?‘:
  • If you observed she-oaks, select ‘Yes’ then record data on she-oaks (this includes data on chewings and feed trees; see Step 5, below).
  • If you did not observe she-oaks, select ‘No’, and proceed to Step 6 (below).
• If you would like to record additional information about your site or survey, click the text box under ‘Notes’ and enter your notes.

If you would like to add any photo(s) of she-oaks, chewings, or water source click the ‘ADD PHOTO’ box and select your images to upload.

If you found she-oaks and/or feed trees and chewings:

• Under ‘From where you are standing, roughly how many she-oaks are around you?’, select the category that best describes your observations at that location.
• If you observed she-oaks with cones, select ‘Yes’ under ‘Do any of the she-oaks have cones?’.
• If you did not observe she-oaks with cones, select ‘No’, and proceed to Step 6 (below).
• If you observed any chewings or Glossies feeding, select ‘Yes’ under ‘Do any of these she-oaks with cones have chewings underneath them or Glossies feeding in them?’.
• If you did not observe any chewings or Glossies feeding, select ‘No’, and proceed to Step 6 (below).
• Under ‘How many she-oaks have chewings underneath them or Glossies feeding in them?’, select the category that best describes your observations during the survey.
• For she-oaks with chewings or birds in them:
  • under ‘Tree species’ select one option (select ‘Unsure’ if you are unsure of the tree species); and
  • under ‘Chewing colours’ select all options that apply (select ‘Unsure’ if you are unsure of the colour).
• If you observed more than one feed tree species, click on ‘Add tree species…’ and enter details of the additional species.
• When finished, click ‘Next’ in the bottom left-hand corner of the page.

• For she-oaks with chewings or birds in them:
  • under ‘Tree species’ select one option (select ‘Unsure’ if you are unsure of the tree species); and
  • under ‘Chewing colours’ select all options that apply (select ‘Unsure’ if you are unsure of the colour).
    Hint: hover over the ‘?’ symbol with your cursor to bring up additional information.
• If you observed more than one feed tree species, click on ‘Add tree species…’ and enter details of the additional species.
• When finished, click ‘Next’ in the bottom left-hand corner of the page.

No Glossies observed:

• If you have not observed a feed tree or Glossy after 15-30min of searching (zero observations), this is valuable data. Leave the ‘SIGHTINGS’ tab blank then click ‘Next’ to record the absence of Glossies and feed trees at the survey point. A warning may appear; ignore this.

At least one Glossy observed:

• If you observed a Glossy, under the ‘SIGHTINGS’ tab, click in the ‘Search by species name’ box at the top of the page and select ‘Glossy Black-Cockatoo’.
  

• Under ‘Count’ enter in the number of Glossies you observed.
• Under ‘Sex’ select one option.
• Under ‘Age’ select one option.
• Under ‘Main activity’ select one option that best describes the activity the bird(s) spent most of their time engaged in.
• If you would like to record additional information, click the text box under ‘Notes’ and enter your notes.
• If you have taken a photo of the bird, click the ‘ADD PHOTO’ box and select your images to upload.

Add another Glossy:

• To add information on another bird (of different age, sex, or behaviour), repeat the process by clicking in the ‘Search by species name’ box and selecting ‘Glossy Black-Cockatoo’.

• When finished, click ‘Next’ in the top right-hand corner of the page.

• Once you have finished entering data, under the ‘REVIEW & SUBMIT’ tab, review your data to ensure you have entered it correctly.
• If you need to edit data, click the relevant tab (e.g. ‘LOCATION’, ‘DETAILS’, ‘SIGHTINGS’) at the top of the page.
• When finished, click the green ‘Submit Survey’ button at the bottom of the page.
