Help us monitor Western Australia’s black-cockatoos

Love black-cockatoos and enjoy getting out into the field? BirdLife Australia is looking for enthusiastic people to help monitor known black-cockatoo nest hollows across Western Australia.

Each year, our monitoring helps us understand where black-cockatoos are breeding, how successful they are, and how populations are changing over time. This information is critical for guiding conservation actions for these threatened species.

BirdLife currently monitors nest hollows across a huge area of the black-cockatoos’ breeding range—from the Goldfields–Esperance and Great Southern regions through to the Mid West. With such a large area to cover, we are looking to expand our team of volunteers and increase the amount of ground we can cover each breeding season.

We’re seeking Expressions of Interest from people who are keen to get involved in black-cockatoo breeding monitoring, primarily between September and December each year.

You don’t need to be an expert—enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, attention to detail and an interest in black-cockatoos and fieldwork are what we’re looking for.

What does volunteering involve?

• Travelling to known black-cockatoo breeding grounds
• Observing hollows and recording breeding activity through data collection apps
• Using a mobile app/GPS to navigate to sites
• Carrying and using pole cameras to assess known or suspected tree hollows
• Working independently or with another volunteer/team
• Working outdoors, including in rural and remote areas
• Undertaking surveys primarily between September and December

What are we looking for?

• Interest in black-cockatoos and conservation
• Willingness to work outdoors
• Ability to walk through the bush, carrying equipment
• Ability to navigate/use basic technology (or willingness to learn)
• Attention to detail and thoroughness
• Comfort working in rural/remote environments
• Previous field experience is helpful but not necessarily required
