Use our email tool below to send the candidates in Solomon a powerful message that we want to secure a future for Darwin’s local migratory shorebirds.
Darwin Harbour, on beautiful Larrakia Country, is critical to shorebirds with many beaches and coastal areas supporting internationally significant populations of birds, including Great Knot, Greater Sand Plover, Far Eastern Curlew, Common Greenshank. Sadly, these species are in decline.
Birds like the Far Eastern Curlew have seen their global population decline by over 80% in the last forty years. Curlews are sensitive to the destruction of their intertidal mudflat and mangrove homes, as well as disturbance by people and dogs. These threats are easily avoidable, if managed correctly. We want to ensure that Darwin is a safe haven for migratory shorebirds.
All migratory shorebirds are listed in national nature laws aiming to protect our wildlife and nature, with threatened species like Far Eastern Curlews listed as a priority threatened species for the government to save. Australia is also a signatory to various bilateral international agreements that seek to protect these birds and their habitats. This means that the Australian Government has a responsibility to Australians, and the world, to take action to stop these declines, and save our shorebirds.
This election, we can give Darwin’s iconic shorebirds a voice, by ensuring the candidates in the electorate of Solomon know what is at stake, and commit to managing Darwin Harbour for our remarkable local birdlife.
